Abstract
Labor productivity and demographic change-a look at Germany and Japan 30 years after the German Bundestag's commission
Abstract: Labour Productivity and Demographic Change – A Look at Germany and Japan 30 Years After the German Bundestag’s Enquete Commission
This study analyses the macroeconomic relationship between productivity growth and demographic change in Germany and Japan in the period from 1970 to 2020, with a particular focus on the development of the working-age population as a key measure to demographic change. The trends observed in Germany and especially in Japan suggest that demographic change could be one of the main factors behind the long-term slowdown in productivity growth. However, a detailed analysis shows that in Germany the sharpest decline in productivity growth occurred before the population began to age markedly. Thus, there have to be other factors that have a dampening effect on productivity growth.
