Abstract

Occupational Orientation for German ’Hauptschüler", School Performance and Integration in the Labour Market

This study examines the effects of summer schools on the subsequent integration into the labour market of pupils with a poor school performance. The results show that those pupils who have been to such summer schools achieve better grades in German and the Natural Sciences when they leave school compared to a control group of pupils who did not attend these schools. This is not, however, attributable to an improvement in the performance of those who attended the summer schools, but to the deteriorating outcomes of those who did not. This difference does improve the labour-market prospects of the ’summer school" pupils. This effect may occur because of the intensive care of these pupils when they return to their usual schools after the summer school has ended.
