Abstract
Young People from Ethnic Minorities and Training Market: The (Re-)Production of Ethnic Inequality in Vocational Education and Training
In Germany the precarious situation of young people from ethnic minorities with regards to access to vocational education and training (VET) is empirically well founded. There is evidence of ethnic closure processes concerning this status passage. However, there is limited research on progress through, and results of, VET. This paper, therefore, examines the educational prospects of young people from ethnic minorities in the training market and the importance of VET process for the (re-)production of ethnic inequalities. Particular attention is thereby given to the impact of VET conditions for VET attainment and earnings. In examining VET outcomes, this paper builds on work by Bourdieu to include cultural and social resources as well as organizational opportunities in the analysis. These are taken as proxies for underlying institutional arrangements.
