Abstract

The paper examines the contingency factors influencing the use of performance measures in SMEs. The extant research does not provide a satisfying theoretical framework that explains performance measure usage and puts usage patterns into relation with SME characteristics. The present work drafts a general description model of SME performance measure usage and derives a set of hypotheses on relationships between these model elements. Based on the results of eight case studies the paper derives a set of hypotheses on the usage of performance measures in SMEs and the contingency factors influencing it.
