Abstract
Research & Development (R&D investments and new product developments are key drivers of long-term growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The present paper discusses the central arguments for a positive and negative influence of unions on R&D investments. On one hand, unions improve the coordination of managers and workers, and encourage investments into firm-specific human capital. Both factors should enable successful R&D projects. On the other hand, unions may appropriate part of the returns to successful inventions. If employers anticipate the latter, unions might decrease R&D spending of SMEs.
