Abstract
Pietro Aretino’s L’Orazia: an Anti-Classicist Tragedy?
The tragedy L’Orazia (1546) occupies a special position in Pietro Aretino’s oeuvre because it is not characterized by an explicitly anti-classicist perspective, as is the case in Aretino’s other texts. Nevertheless, research has sometimes attributed an anti-classicist character to the Orazia because of its stylistic peculiarities. In view of this starting point, the relationship of the Orazia to the terms classicism and anti-classicism appears ambiguous. This article aims to clarify this stance by analysing the text against the background of the theory and practice of tragedy in the Cinquecento. The analysis shows that the classification of the Orazia as an anti-classicist text is problematic, because, at the time of the text’s composition, no normative model can yet be identified in Italian tragedy.
