Poor Henry of Hartmann von Aue: From the Miracle to the Assertion of Free Will. A Comparison of Versions A and B
Poor Henry is a medieval exemplum written by Hartmann von Aue at the end of the 12th century. The text tells the story of a knight stricken by God with leprosy whose salvation can only be assured by the blood of a virgin willing to sacrifice herself for him. For a long time, the differences between the two versions of the text – versions A and B – were analysed on the basis of the personality of the young virgin. However, a precise comparison of the two versions shows that the most important differences concern Henry himself. While in the A version he seems to be touched by the Holy Spirit, the B version grants him more autonomy and freedom. From the beginning, the text refers to his capacity for empathy so that he no longer needs the intervention of the Holy Spirit to renounce the sacrifice of the girl. This renunciation springs only from his free will and a predisposition to goodness.
