Abstract

In this article, the author describes an empirical study, using a cross-section analysis, of the utilisation of the ambulatory medical services offered by office-based specialists in small areas with varying densities of doctors. Tue aim of the study is to deterrnine whether there are any indications of supply-induced demand for the services of officebased doctors, a phenomenon described in the literature. Alternative explanations for this phenomenon, in which an increase in doctor density is accompanied by an expansion in per capita services, are also critically exarnined.
