Abstract
A subcommittee "Theory" existed within the Verein für Socialpolitik (German Econornic Association) already in the 'twenties. The refoundation of the Verein entailed also that of the comrnittee for theory. Its members endeavoured from the start to overcome the heritage of the historical school and to do theoretical work according to the Anglosaxon conceptions; Keynesianism was dominant for two decades. lt is possible to study on the basis of its publications how work in the comrnittee gradually reached international standards and attained them at about the time of its direction by Wilhelm Krelle.
