Abstract

Conventional economic theory has it that the commons are doomed to failure. The present paper discusses the rationale for this verdict, but then proceeds, in light of empirical evidence in favor of the potential sustainability of common pool resources, to a state of the arts summary of alternative modeling aproaches. These approaches, whether they are from empirical economics or cognitive psychology, to mention a few disciplines, have in common that they do not treat common property resources as black boxes, as this is done in conventional economics. Thus, the paper provides a basis for further empirical research on its topic.
