Abstract

Japanese direct investments in the west are, in actuality, cross-border production arrangements by Japanese firms in Europe and North America. This may lead to the transfer of the direct investors' organizational patterns, i.e. intra- and interorganizational structures, as well as, institutional policies, into the market economy of the chosen region. Firstly, the paper examines, from the perspective of institutional economics, which Japanese organizational patterns differ from their western counterparts, and concurrently, are seen as being successful. Secondly, the degree of proliferation of these successful organizational patterns into western economies through Japanese direct investment is investigated.
