Abstract

The paper considers the problem of testing theorems of mathematical economics - viewed, of course, as propositions in economics instead of mathematics. It stresses the role of unreal assumptions. The epistemological point of view is that of critical rationalism. The main example is the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek theorem, the factorcontent version of the Heckscher-Ohlin theorem. Problems discussed range from logical problems (What should be tested?) to the rationale of robustness arguments. It is shown that unreal assumptions are less problematic if they are law-like (as the rationality principle). Too many unreal assumptions of the descripitive type (as the assumption of factor-price equalization), however, make it impossible to draw theoretically relevant conclusions from empirical work.
