Abstract

Economic Determinants of Regionalism in the Russian Federation

This paper seeks to identify groupings of oblast-level regional units with similar economic characteristics and, hence, similar preferences regarding the restructuring of relations between regional and central government. A cluster analysis is performed with exports, raw materials, heavy industry, and agriculture as explanatory variables. The vast majority of Russian citizens are found to live in areas that differ only modestly with respect to these variables. Secession from Russia is a viable option at most for a few resource-rich areas in the Far East with direct access to fast-growing East Asia.
