Abstract

This paper analyses the empiricist’s argument, that formal economic theory must be either “mere axiomatics” or “empirical”, but cannot be both. The paper tries to show that this argument, received as it may be, does not stand up to careful scrutiny. At any rate, the empiricist’s argument can hardly be used to attack general equilibrium theory unless both formal theory and interpretations are treated explicitly. The paper presents a simple example of axiomatics and interpretations and shows what is involvedin. a discussion of this miniature theory’s “empirical content”
