Abstract
This study presents econometric estimations of union-membership functions based on a large set of micro data for the Federal Republic of Germany. Individual characteristics (e.g., sex, income, schooling) as well as characteristics of the work place (firm size) turned out to be important determinants for the individual propensity to unionize. Based on the results of the estimations we "forecast" the union density in 29 manufacturing industries.
