Abstract
This Thünen-Lecture given at the 1989 Annual Meeting of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik) in Vienna is an attempt at integrating Thünen’s spatial model with Schumpeter’s approach to economic development. Key notions designed to improve our understanding of world economic growth include: growth poles and locations of knowledge production; competition among locations and competition in time; locational innovation and natural capital flows; competitiveness as attraction for mobile resources; indebtedness for growth or consumption; catching-up processes in catching-up regions; protection as an impediment to catching-up and to world economic growth.
