Abstract
After a short representation of the whole range of the shadow economy and of the main hypotheses on its causes, two well known estimation methods will be adopted in order to measure the black economy, from the demand as well as the supply side, and the self service economy: Cagan's currency demand approach and the LISREL model approach. The empirical investigation shows that the black economy can be explained supply sided as a result of increasing direct tax burden but also demand sided as a result of an above average increase of prices for services. Tight income situations of private households provide additional incentives for self service activities, as a simultaneous estimation of the black economy and do-it-yourself shows. The empirical result shows up a stagnation of the black economy as well as DIY at 8%, 4% resp., of GNP since 1983. Thereby, black activities are supplied mostly by firms (80%), not by private households.
