Abstract

The article proves, that J. M. Keynes essay „Nationale Selbstgenügsamkeit", published in Schmollers Jahrbuch in 1933 is no faithful translation of the known English versions but a radical revision. Its purpose could only be to eliminate passages politically unpleasant in contemporary Germany. As the originator of the revision Arthur Spiethoff, the editor, can be made out. But Keynes though making objections has agreed to the publication in the garbled version: "on your (Spiethoffs) responsibility." This is a remarkable example of scholar "self-censorship" at the beginning of the NS-regime, with the participation of a political clear-sighted, famous foreign colleague.
