Abstract
Economic analysis of hospital performance requires an operative definition of efficiency. Out of several possibilities an input/output-relation called "costliness" is chosen as an example. This indicator of efficiency is defined by an econometric model. The empirical analysis of the model, which is applied to 80 hospitals, leads to the conclusion that there is no significant relation between "costliness" and the case costs of these hospitals. Relative differences in efficiency between the hospitals do little to explain variance in case costs. The main factors of the case costs are hospital-size, patient-mix, case-number per bed and - probably - the quality of patient care.
