Abstract
The Notion of “Productive Forces” in the Works of Friedrich List and the Present Development Problem
In his principal work “The National System of Political Economy” List argues that the principal aim of development policy ought to be the development of “productive forces”. These are understood to be the causes of wealth in the widest sense of the word. According to List, their discussion by the classical economists is at least inadequate. In the present paper, it is argued that a similar inadequacy is characteristie for many present views of the problem of underdevelopment. This, in turn, is caused by a rather narrow definition of the subject matter of economics as, for example, by Walter Eucken
