Abstract
The regulation of financial markets makes use of a variety of instruments. The paper argues that among these are “hybrid mechanisms” that transcend and call into question the traditional boundaries of state regulation and societal self-regulation. After a short introduction to the basic components the concept and its key areas of operation are exemplified by a number of recent regulatory activities.
