Abstract

This study is based on family systems theory and examines the failure of succession in family businesses with focus on the entrepreneurial family. So far, predecessors and successors have often been studied, but a holistic view of family dynamics, such as roles and hidden motives, is lacking. Interviews with advisors were analyzed with the Gioa method and a process model was developed. We show how factors of the entrepreneurial family in combination with factors of the connection of the entrepreneurial family to the business can lead to the failure of succession. Specific possibilites for further research are discussed.
