Abstract

The article, which emerged from a lecture (given several times in 2022), asks about the historical roots of the Ukraine conflict. They can be found in the imperialist traditions of Russian history from Peter the Great to Joseph Stalin. Until the middle of the 20th century, Russia expanded further and further to the northwest, west, south and also to East Asia. This historical process, which spanned centuries, only ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990/91. The current Russian war policy is trying with all its might to reverse the development and to regain at least part of the sphere of influence lost since 1991.
