Abstract
Successful revolutions overthrow the prevalent form of government to replace it with a new political order. In the 20th century, this happened twice in Germany, in 1918/19 and in 1989. Hubert Treiber compares these two revolutions from the perspective of the subsequent free elections. He uses the concepts and framework of Max Weber and Heinrich Popitz. Treiber evaluates traditional explanations, why voters voted for the NSDAP in the Weimar Republic and why voters now vote for the AfD in former Eastern Germany. The comparison sheds new light on extremist voting patterns.
