Abstract
This study investigated whether selected sustainability ratings are suitable for adequately capturing and depicting ESG performance in the German insurance industry. The results show that the ESG ratings examined are only suitable for measuring ESG performance to a limited extent due to a lack of significant statistical correlations and large deviations in the scores and assessment criteria. Particularly noteworthy are the sometimes considerable absolute differences between the rating scores of an individual company, which can lead to fundamentally different assessments of the sustainability of the same company.
