Abstract
This article examines the theological-philosophical concept of human dignity in the light of the Vatican declaration “Dignitas Infinita”. Starting from the Platonic, Stoic and Christian roots of the concept of dignity, its genesis is illuminated from the Christian idea of the likeness of God and integrated into the context of the order of creation and redemption. The historical development of the concept of human dignity is outlined, with a particular focus on Renaissance humanism. Finally, the central importance of the notion of dignity is demonstrated on the basis of its necessity as a foundation for the theological understanding of the person.
