- Ricarda B. Bouncken ist Professorin für Strategisches Management und Organisation an der Universität Bayreuth. Abstract
The flexible pattern matching approach (FPMA) allows theory driven but also more open theory development based on qualitative data and as such is particularly useful small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurship research. The FPMA allows theoretical patterns to be developed based on theoretical considerations, which are then iteratively compared with empirically obtained patterns. From this, new theoretical insights can be developed, such as mechanisms of action, differences to or limits of established knowledge. However, due to its iterative comparison of theoretical and empirical patterns, the FPMA places special demands on goal-oriented case selection and the saturation of data collection. To these ends, this article discusses criteria and gives recommendations which are additionally backed by the analysis of previous studies that have used the FPMA in the area of SMEs and entrepreneurship research.
