Abstract

Personality and sacrality of man with a view of Jacques Maritain

The article examines the concepts of the personality and sanctity of the human being, particularly in relation to the philosophy of Jacques Maritain. Furthermore, it reflects on the relationship between natural law, human dignity, and democratic society in engagement with Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. The central thesis of the reflections is that humans, as the image of God, possess an inalienable dignity, which is manifested in their fundamental rights and is not established by state or societal acts of will, but rather recognized. The Augustinian distinction between civitas Dei and civitas terrena, which serves as the basis for a nuanced determination of the relationship between Church and State, is linked with Maritain’s Christian humanism to defend a rule of law grounded in personality against utilitarian and naturalistic approaches. Finally, consequences are drawn from these reflections in the field of Christian social ethics, which form an approach to harmonize natural law-based common good with personal dignity.
