Abstract

Retelling and Wiedererzaehlen: Ten Theses on an Old New Phenomenon

Retelling is a transhistorical practice that has been realized in different ways across various periods. This article takes the current trend of retellings in Anglophone literature as a starting point for developing ten theses on what retelling – both as a practice and a product – entails, focusing in particular on the significance of repetition. Medieval literature provides a particularly insightful backdrop for theorizing retelling, as it was the norm of narration in medieval texts (known as wiedererzaehlen in German). While postmodern literature also relies on repetition, it has to be assessed by a different set of parameters. Taking retelling(s) seriously can offer a fresh perspective on literary history and the history of reception.
