Abstract

Interpretations of Genesis in the Romanic Querelle des Femmes

The Querelle des Femmes began at the end of the Middle Ages and remained prominent in Europe during the early modern period. In this dispute about the virtues and vices of women, Genesis 1–3 becomes a central topos across linguistic and national borders. The selected texts in Romance languages show how sophisticated rhetorical repertoires and contemporaneous forms of argumentation are adapted into new positions on gender difference. The questions at stake are: does the first creation of Adam signify male superiority or did God save the crowning of creation for Eve at the very end of the process? And with reference to Genesis 3: why did the serpent turn to Eve, not to Adam? Was the subordination of woman a result of her responsibility in the fall or part of a divine plan of creation?

Voices for and against female equality likewise refer to these common sources from the Bible. Thereby it becomes obvious that Querelle texts address specific social spaces and context-dependent, temporary situations. Such a pragmatic ethic corresponds to the mindset of the time, as developed by casuistical scholasticism.
