Bunyan’s Conversions. Conversion and Creation in Grace Abounding
John Bunyan’s Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666) thematizes beginnings as well as performing them. Inquiring, in his autobiography, into when and how he came to be the person he is, the Puritan writer also tries to determine the moment of his conversion. This turns out to be unexpectedly difficult. The attempt results in a conversive practice of writing and produces a text which narrates a series of repeatable conversions. At the same time, Bunyan’s life shows how he becomes an author. As his allegedly plain and simple writing turns out to be both complex and poetically creative, his conversion experiences appear permeated by allegory in a way that adumbrates his later works. Still, Grace Abounding does not provide a lever for shortcircuiting creativity and creation, authorship and the making of the world. In particular, Bunyan’s Exposition on the First Ten Chapters of Genesis disturbingly shows how creationist allegorizing, under the burden of double predestination, misses the point when approaching God’s Creation.
