Abstract

Wating often is related to the experience of social power which is accompanied by a fundamental powerlessness for those who are forced to wait. The powerful impose a time structure and relevances of time that are contrary to those of the waiting, nevertheless forcibly have to be accepted. In times of crisis waiting initializes chances to challenge established power and time structures, if individuals question imposed relevances of time based on intrinsic motivation – waiting can lead to resistance and counter power. The connection of power and counter power involved in the phenomenon of waiting is analyzed with the case study of the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales of the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina, in which the waiting for a new faculty building persisted 25 years.
