Abstract

The present article starts by addressing the issue of the sociability of waiting: Do people individually wait on their own – as is occasionally argued – or is there something like a commonality-creating waiting experience? Against this background, the text assigns context to the concept “waiting community” and reveals the elementary structural features of such group. William Golding"s well known novel “Lord of the Flies” is to this end interpreted in the sense of a foundation scene. Being based on the reading of this book, this paper discloses the members" conjunctive time perception, the establishing of an anticipation culture, and a particular fragility as three fundamental characteristics of waiting communities that might serve as theoretical indicators for their further investigation.
