Abstract

Nurses' Early Job Exit – Challenges for Health-Care Providers. An Empirical Analysis of Care Facilities in the County of Reutlingen

The aging German population will lead to a significant surge in demand for informal and professional care over the next decades. Using a representative sample of nurses in the county of Reutlingen, this article analyses different factors that aim to increase the ‘nursing pool’. We distinguish between different job-related and operational factors that are chosen by the care facilities. Policy aims to increase the supply of professional nursing staff. One main means to achieve this is to increase job duration. The idea is that prolonged job duration will lead to a higher level of professional nursing staff. Second, the paper generates new insights from analysing the job training of the nursing staff. We find that younger nurses leave their jobs earlier, whereas older nurses and nurses with on-the-job training are less likely to switch jobs.
