Abstract
According to the agenda proposed in this article, the sociology of the arts aims at describing and explaining collective social phenomena in the production, mediation and reception of art. The arts are considered in a wide understanding that comprises all divisions of the arts as well as “high” and “popular” forms. Phenomena of art are approached from an empirical-analytical perspective. The author advocates actor-based explanations of art-related macro-phenomena and the particular adoption of quantitative and comparative methods. The sociological perspective is delineated from other disciplinary approaches. For each of the three research areas, core questions are formulated, seminal contributions of the international research literature presented and their insights and shortcomings discussed.
