Abstract

This paper will discuss the challenges and obstacles, but also the motivations and rewards speakers of the youth language “Camfranglais” are experiencing in everyday life. To gain an insight into the sociolinguistic situation of urban youths in Cameroon, both the attitudes of Camfranglais-speakers compared to those of their adult counterparts (teachers, parents etc.) vis-à-vis this variety, and the channels of its reproduction and distribution will be examined.

With a special focus on the “carriers” of youth culture (such as rap-music and magazines), I will describe which role this variety plays in the development of a Cameroonian identity for adolescents and young adults in Cameroon. The hopeless venture of the educators to ban Camfranglais from schools and homes is shown to be losing ground to the current trend among the youths to present themselves as part of a modern and up-to-date community.

Additionally, some aspects of a targeted influence on the behaviour of the adolescents effected by song lyrics, HIV-educational-campaigns or advertisements through the use of this variety will be addressed and discussed as a way how media could use Camfranglais positively instead of lamenting the loss of Molière's standards.

Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die Herausforderungen und Hindernisse, aber auch die Motivationen und Belohnungen, die Sprecher des “Camfranglais“ in ihrem Alltag erfahren. Um einen Einblick in die soziolinguistische Situation urbaner Jugendlicher in Kamerun zu bekommen, werden die Haltungen der Camfranglais-Sprecher gegenüber dieser Varietät, ihre Reproduktionsweise und ihre Verbreitung untersucht.

Mit einem Fokus auf die “Träger“ der Jugendkultur (so wie Rap-Musik und Magazine) beschreibe ich die Rolle, die diese Varietät in der Entwicklung der kamerunischen Identität für Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene spielt. Das hoffnungslose Unterfangen von Lehrern und Eltern, das Camfranglais aus seinem Gebrauch zu verbannen, erweist sich dabei als dem jugendlichen Trend unterlegen, sich als Teil einer modernen Welt zu präsentieren.

Außerdem wird aufgezeigt, welche positive Rolle die Verwendung des Camfranglais z. B. in Musiktexten oder HIV-Kampagnen bei der Veränderung des Verhaltens Jugendlicher spielen kann.
