Abstract

The present paper takes up the issue of concentration and economic stability, which is equally important in the theoretical and the political perspective. At first theoretical arguments in support of the conjecture that the oligopolistic sector of industry exhibits a rather independent cyclical behavior are suggested. Reference is hereby made to a model of oligopolistic behavior belonging to post-keynesian theory. An empirical test is performed by means of correlation analysis using a number of different economic indicators. The conjecture of an independent dynamic is confirmed. Finally, the political consequences of these findings are discussed. The main conclusion says that more direct forms of political control are called for to regulate the oligopolistic sector.
