Abstract
Arrow’s Condition (3), “Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives” suggests an “independence aspect” and an “irrelevance aspect”. The irrelevance aspect is irrelevant and misleading. The independence aspect can be understood as being contained in the “ordinality aspect” expressed in the formal definition of the condition, whereas the ordinality aspect is already expressed in the usual definition of the social welfare function. Therefore, in the context of traditional theories of social choice Condition (3) is superfluous
