Abstract

In specific social contexts, stress is not an unintended side effect of excessive demands or inadequate organization, but an intended and desired result of organizational action. Focusing on the U.S. prison camp Guantánamo, the article deals with an extreme case of “organized stress”. Based on reports of former Guantánamo inmates, the study first examines the organizational structures that shape the experiences of violation in the camp. It analyzes the programs effective in the camp (punishment programs and investigation programs), the communication channels (external and within the camp), and the personnel (the camp leadership and its strategies for dividing the inmates). Two more general implications of the case study are then discussed. First, it is shown that the structures of violation at Guantánamo cannot be understood without considering its roots in psychological stress research. Second, it is argued that the analysis of the prison camp can increase the sociological sensitivity to structures of violation with respect to other organizational contexts.
