Abstract
Does international law harm the stability of the international order? Does it hinder an adequate German foreign policy in times of "world disorder"? To address these questions, the article explores three central objections to the functional adequacy of international law raised by the theory of (neo-)realism in international relations: the instrumentalization of law by great powers, the contested Western hegemony of values, and the claimed illusion of the cooperation paradigm in international relations. In addressing these objections, the article presents a counter-narrative according to which, even in a changing world order, the persisting benefits of legal ordering should not be carelessly neglected.
