Abstract
Assuming a utility-maximizing homo oeconomicus, utility-oriented motives for voluntary engagement should stand out among the spectrum of conceivable motives for doing volunteer work. However, because utility-oriented motives, unlike altruistic motives, are likely to be socially undesirable a systematic bias can be expected to arise in empirical research. On the basis of an online survey of volunteers in football clubs in Germany, a social-desirability bias was measured using indirect interview techniques. The results of the empirical analysis confirm the dominance of egoistic utility motives for doing volunteer work.
