Abstract

Abstract: Regulation or Responsibilisation? On the Revision of Class- And Cultural Compromise in Times of Climate Crisis

In current debates on the climate crisis, the welfare state is frequently emphasised as a crucial means to increase social acceptance of climate protection measures via compensation and redistribution. Analyses of qualitative focus group data, however, suggest that core conflicts on climate policies revolve less around specific distributional issues and more around fundamental questions of socio-political governance. The data shows that material and cultural distributive conflicts manifest in different forms of resistance to valorisation and devaluation inherent in fundamental welfare institutions and principles. The article argues that against this background, increased acceptance of climate policy can only be achieved to a limited extent via compensation and redistribution.
