Abstract
Abstract: Social Protection in German Development Cooperation – An Important Contribution to Sustainable Development Strategies
The article outlines the role of social protection in development cooperation in reducing poverty and social inequality. Currently, 53 % of the world’s population, around 4 billion people, live without access to social protection. The main challenges in the countries of the Global South are the tight financial situation and the problem that existing programs often do not reach those who need support the most. German development cooperation focuses on system strengthening (better embedding of social security in the overall system), digitalization, inclusive design and cooperation with other policy areas such as employment, tax or climate policy.
