Abstract
The French Historians’ Dispute A View From Afar on the Extension of § 130 StGB
The French memorial laws make statements about certain historical events justiciable; this affects historians in their self-image and their professional autonomy. The historians’ dispute triggered by an interview with Olivier Petré-Grenouilleau about the African slave trade made the danger posed by such laws instantly clear. These make definitional provisions. Although the extension of Section 130 of the German Criminal Code (StGB) is not directly directed against certain historiographical statements, in future groups who feel defamed by scientific statements will have a means of taking legal action against them.
