Abstract
The Threat Posed by EDI (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion): Freedom of Speech, Academic Freedom and the Value of Truth
Most universities in the UK today follow a mission statement that is characterized by the buzzwords equality, diversity and inclusion. This article argues that this higher education policy program is not only anti-meritocratic and thus already poses a threat to the quality of academic work, but also endangers the unbiased pursuit of knowledge – the core mission of universities. Fighting these dangers only in the name of academic freedom is not promising, however, because it is easy to argue that academic freedom is limited by the consensus in a discipline and is also not intended to protect researchers from their own colleagues, who today often pose the greatest threat to their freedom and work. Rather, we must be willing to recognize that the search for truth is a value in itself, beyond the ideals of classical liberalism, if we are to protect universities from destruction by EDI ideology.
